A Good Pour: Karen Mitchell

A Good Pour is a series of good conversations with good people. It is inspired by the 100 Cups Academy with the awesome Jason Elkins through the very helpful TN Small Business Development Center at Vol State. Learn more at https://100cups.coffee/.

A Good Pour with Karen Mitchell

How I Know Karen

I’ve heard Karen speak several times through Leadership Sumner and Educate A Woman (one of my favorite nonprofit events), but this conversation was officially the first time I’ve had the pleasure of meeting her. Karen was Rachel Mullin‘s recommendation for a good conversation with a good person. I had so much fun during this conversation.

I met Karen Mitchell for “A Good Pour” on a rainy day, but we weren’t dreary at all. She’s the type of person you want to meet up with when it is yucky outside because her good mood comes from her heart and not from what is going on in the world. I loved learning more about Karen, and I think you will, too.

Karen’s Sumner Story

Karen grew up in Virginia but moved to Sumner County after she married her husband, Glen. They have one daughter, Sarah, and one son, Aaron, who were both born and raised in Hendersonville.

Karen has served as the Vice President for Resource Development & E.D. of the Foundation at Volunteer State Community College since 2007. There, she leads a team of six. I loved learning that she is a Vol State alumni and met her husband there.

In 2008, Karen created Educate a Woman after years of having a dream to support women philanthropically. I look forward to this event every year because it tugs at your heart and gives you an opportunity to laugh with your friends. When I said this, Karen said that was the intentional plan. She said she and the original planning committee wanted to give women an opportunity to sit, eat, laugh, and be inspired.

Karen also opened Salt Med Spa in Hendersonville in 2016 with her husband and daughter.

What is helping you right now?

Karen enjoys studying and preparing for her couples Connect Group at church. This work helps her find her strength and energy. She finds it is a way to center her and point her back in the right direction, no matter what is going on in her life.

By the time she was finished talking, I totally wanted to listen in on one of her lessons. I know it is jam-packed with wisdom and good teaching.

Karen – thank you for joining me for a Good pour. I especially appreciate you asking about my children and taking the time to give me the best advice, “Hang in there. Enjoy it.” I’m so grateful to be in this community with you. – KG
