A Good Pour: Brenda Payne

A Good Pour is a series of good conversations with good people. It is inspired by the 100 Cups Academy with the awesome Jason Elkins through the very helpful TN Small Business Development Center at Vol State. Learn more at https://100cups.coffee/.

A Good Pour with Brenda Payne

How I Know Brenda

I first heard Brenda speak when she opened the 2017 Leadership Sumner retreat. I knew at that moment that I needed to meet her. When the class was asked to pick two community leaders to interview, one of the leaders I quickly requested was Brenda Payne. I have had several conversations with Brenda over the past few years, and I’ve received wisdom and inspiration from each one. When I decided to start “A Good Pour,” I knew I wanted to ask her to participate.

Brenda’s Sumner Story

It might be best just to list all the Sumner County organizations that Brenda has served: Volunteer State University, Sumner Bank and Trust, Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce, Hendersonville Rotary, Sumner County United Way, Leadership Sumner, Volunteer State College Foundation, Historic Rock Castle, Greenways of Sumner County, Sumner County Tourism, Gallatin Shalom Zone, Community Life Bridge, Grace Place Ministries … and those are just the ones she mentioned or I could find online. She is a true example of being a servant leader.

She loves Sumner County for being a family-friendly, safe place. She said, “people help each other and love each other well and through anything – from tornadoes to pandemics.”

What is helping you right now?

Exercising. Brenda prefers walking as a way to move her body and spend time in prayer. She adds that each time she prays, she gives thanks for life, health, and Christ. Then she asks how to be taught how to love and show kindness as much as she can. Can I offer a collective Amen to her prayer?

Brenda Payne Quote

An organization or cause near and dear to your heart:

Brenda’s favorite cause is whoever is hurting. She wants to help people feel good about who they are, be healthy, and find a way to move forward.

What is a movie, television show, podcast, writer, song, etc., that you think should be added to The Good List?

  1. Doctor Zhivago
  2. The Second Mountain (The Quest for a Moral Life) by David Brooks
(Read more from The Good List.)

What is one marketing question you have for me?

Brenda didn’t ask me a question because she said, “an important part of leading a business is knowing you can’t do it all.” She added that a good business leader recognizes what he or she shouldn’t be doing, and she says that she doesn’t do marketing. While I disagree with her and think that she markets herself and any organization she represents well, I respect what she is trying to say. If you don’t know how to do it, your best bet is to find someone that does.

Brenda – thank you for all you have done and continue to do for this community. Thank you for being an inspiration and an example for all those that come after you, especially women leaders. – KG
